Pursuit

I traveled to a velodrome outside of Minneapolis to see my friend Ben race bikes last summer. He’s been riding around in circles there for years, but I never made the time to go see him. My excuses quickly melted away as I prepared to spend the summer in Berlin, with the looming possibility of an indefinite move. Sitting on the metal bleachers, I watched my longtime friend’s quiet focus transform under the stadium lights into a raw intensity I’d never met. I headed for home in a swirl of thoughts that crystallized a few days later into the following:  

We see those we love most clearly when we are present in their pursuit of passion.
